Knowledge – History: The Rise and Expansion of the Roman Empire

The Roman Empire was a powerful state that existed from the 8th century BC to the 5th century AD. Rome is regarded as one of the most important civilizations in history. Rome made significant contributions to literature, architecture, law, engineering, and military tactics. The Roman Empire was founded by Romulus, who, according to legend, was the son of the god Mars.

One of the most important aspects of the Roman Empire was its expansion. The Roman Empire began as a small city-state on the banks of the Tiber River in Italy. However, it gradually expanded its territory through a series of conquests. During the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC, Rome conquered much of Italy. In the following centuries, Rome continued to expand its territory, conquering Spain, Gaul, and Greece.

Knowledge – History: The Roman Empire

One of the most well-known and significant empires in history was the Roman one. After the fall of the Roman Republic in 27 BCE, it was founded and had success until the end of the Western Roman Empire in 476 CE. The western edge of the empire was located in modern-day Spain, the eastern edge in modern-day Syria, and the northern and southern edges in the United Kingdom and Egypt, respectively. At its height, the Roman Empire included parts of Europe, Africa, and Asia. The estimated size was 6.5 million square kilometers.

The Roman Empire might be said to have been founded by Augustus. Augustus was able to consolidate power after years of civil strife had wreaked havoc on the Roman Republic. He established a system of governance that relied heavily on his own authority but also involved a group of subordinates and advisors. Augustus established peace and prosperity in his empire by extending its borders, investing in infrastructure, and introducing progressive social policies.
